"Here are a few piccy's of my AJ Commander on my recent polar bear trip in arctic Alaska.
Blade stormed through all cutting tasks and withstood the salt spray and the handle was awesome in the minus temps and wind chill. I gave it a thin coating of vaseline as you suggested and it was perfec t- no rust spots. My friend and Inupiat native hunter and guide Robert loved it too. We saw over 30 bears." Olly

    Africa pest control with Blackscout
The Blackscout being used for pest control night bow hunting by East African Bow Sports Ltd. During the night track/stalk all animals were shot under 30 meters distance (amazing). There is an antilope and a jackal in the pictures, both are considered pests by local farmers in Africa. Antilope is very nice eating.

  • Knife sharpening lecture

    Knife sharpening lecture
Periodically I give sharpening instructions to small groups

Unfortunately knife sharpening skills are not thaught any more to us by our grandfathers. Knife sharpening is a skill you have to learn. For the life of me I don't understand when I go and teach how many people know absolutely nothing about how to keep a knife sharp in the field. Clueless does not even begin to describe the lack of knowledge of people.

I tried to give an outline of the all the knives used by the participants in the lecture. Considering that the knife is the most important tool used by survival, bushcraft and outdoors enthusiasts, there is a huge gap of the understanding why a knife is the primary tool and how to maintain it so it does work for you as fast as possible.

    General description of knife parts

General description of blade geometry (grinds)

Can your knife cut 0.5 mm slivers from a hempe rope? This is a good way of checking if your edge geometry is alligned and if you maintained your blade edge to razor.

Most knives of the group could not do this simple task. A knife has to be kept razor sharp in the field at all times!

Explanation of using a stone and stropping and again the hempe rope test: the difference is amazing!

There is always two or three people in the group who think they know more about sharpening than me. But when you look at their knives and the way they are maintained it is quite clear they are clueless. The reason for this is the very bad information available on sharpening a knife. This leads the people that are interested into a world of misinformation about knife sharpening.

  • Opo after 7 years of professional use

Opo after 7 years of professional use
Opo drop point 1:2842 steel. This knife was made for one of the world's top mountain men, Stani Groeneweg. Used by him professionally for 7 years (and by used I mean abused). It has been to all the major environments men lives in, from desert, to arctic to jungle and much more. First picture is when it was delivered, the second picture was taken 7 years later right after a survival course in Scotland run by Bear Grylls.

A profesionlly used knife as Stani's opo cannot be a knife that will last a life time considering the way the knife is used and abused. Stani requested a new replacement knife to be made for him. I insisted that he had the experience of making his own billet of laminated random pattern welded steel. This resulted in a billet of steel being made into a Commander clip point: Commander #29 in the performance knives section. This knife has surpassed the abilities and use of his first knife the Opo drop point. Laminated carbon damast (pattern welded) is the ultimate cutting edge.

    "Betty" in Burma
"Betty" went home. The third generations smith sent the first generations smiths' weapon to Burma with his son. I personally have never seen a knife so suited for that environment. She really looks in her element. Exactly like she was designed by my grandfather to be. And very nicely, it would make my grandfather pleased, is that a real warrior gave it the name Bushmaster. That is what she truly is.

  • 8 years later

    8 years later
Opo, Templar Steel. The last picture is the blade as delivered years ago. The blade was made for a rope access expert. He has used it in the construction business for eight years. The photographs are the knife after eight years of industry tasking. After eight years of use and reshapening the knife was delivered at 42mm and the blade is now 37mm. The blade needed to be reset to bring back geometry which I did. It is interesting for me the see what tasking does to the blade. But more interesting is that every time a blade gets back to me after years of use the original blade edge is different from how I delivered it to them. Still all the customers are pleased with their blades' performance. I know this blade has done the following. It punched through 2mm steel plate for accessing, you can see it on the rear of the ricasso line: the huge scratches (the steel sticks to the Tian coating). From the darkness of that steel coloring I can see it has been done repeatedly. The blade levered in a 400kg fire door. They had problems with fitting in a fire door during a construction job in French Guiana so the fire door wouldn't fit. The Opo was used to slide under the door and then lever it into the final position by stepping on the handle. It never ceases to amaze me what blades can do.

    Two Commanders
HPTSTUF Michael Wittmann 22.4.1914-8.8.44. A client sent me this picture. Regardless of how we view things now, Michael Wittmann was an outstanding tank commander commanding Tiger tanks for the last part of his military career. What a career that was! I am ashamed of the fact that in this day and age the German people regard the German military as something to be disdained. This is an appalling state of affairs. Germany has moved on and has become an economic power house. Its people should look at their modern military as an asset to that power house. HPTSTUF Michael Wittmann was just using what was available to him at that time to do what he wanted most in his life: to command a Tiger tank. This he did with amazing efficiency, skill and bravery. God rest his soul and his Tiger crew.
